Customer's Story

## Overcharged, Contract Unfulfilled, and Items Broken/Missing

Back Up Movers was subcontracted by Paramount Van Lines (who we originally hired for our move) to move our items. The items were picked up on January 9th, 2026 and we were told we would have 30 days of free storage while we finalized purchasing our home. When Back Up Movers arrived, they did not inform us that they were another company. They loaded up half of our items and told us it would be an extra $2203.5 from the original estimate and that they would only take cashiers check. This was paid after verifying the information with Paramount Van Lines and the rest of our items were loaded up. We notified Back Up Movers on January 16, 2026 of the address our items would need to be delivered to and were told by Paramount Van Lines that our items would be delivered after February 4, 2026.

Back Up Movers did not deliver our items within 30 days as stated in the contract, and didn't pay on the storage unit our items were in. After several weeks of back and forth trying to find out where our items were, we found out they were in a storage unit in Utah and that the storage unit was not paid on. We had to pay $1071 of our own money to access the storage unit with our items and prevent it from going to auction. Once we accessed the storage unit we found several items broken and learned that approx. $8,000 worth of items was missing or stolen. We ended up having to move our own items to Washington, resulting in $2500 paid for a uhaul, gas, hotel, etc.

We were overcharged by Back Up Movers, our items were held hostage by the storage company, items are broken/stolen/missing, and we did not receive any support from the company.

How to Avoid Similar Moving Scams

  • Always verify a mover's DOT number on the FMCSA SAFER system before signing any contract.
  • Get at least three written, binding estimates — avoid over-the-phone quotes.
  • Never pay a large deposit upfront. Reputable movers typically collect payment on delivery.
  • Read your Bill of Lading carefully before signing. This is your contract.
  • Document everything: photographs of items, written communications, receipts.
  • Be cautious of prices significantly below other quotes — this is a common bait-and-switch indicator.
