Moving with Your Furry Family: A Guide to Stress-Free Pet Relocation

By USMPO EditorialSeptember 12, 2025

Moving is one of life’s most stressful events, and that’s just for us. For our pets, who thrive on routine and familiarity, a move can be confusing and scary. They don’t understand the boxes, the chaos, or why their favorite sunbeam spot is suddenly blocked.

As a member of the USMPO network, we know that your pets aren’t just animals—they’re family. Their safety and comfort are just as important as your own during a move. This guide is designed to help you prepare your pets for a smooth transition, keeping their tails wagging and their anxiety low.

Pre-Move Planning: The Secret to a Smooth Transition

A successful pet move starts well before moving day. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Schedule a Vet Visit: Book a check-up a few weeks out. Make sure all vaccinations are current and ask your vet for a copy of your pet’s medical records. If your pet has a history of anxiety or motion sickness, discuss calming options or mild sedatives with your veterinarian.

  • Update ID and Microchip Info: This is a crucial step! Update your pet’s microchip with your new address and contact information. A collar with a current ID tag is also essential, just in case they get spooked and run off during the chaos.

  • Prepare Their Travel Crate: Introduce the travel crate or carrier early. Make it a safe, positive space by leaving it open with a favorite blanket or toy inside. This helps them form a positive association, making the trip far less stressful.

  • Create a “Pet Essentials” Kit: Pack a separate bag with everything your pet will need for the first few days: food, water, medications, bowls, leash, waste bags, and a few favorite toys. Keep this kit easily accessible so you don’t have to search through boxes to find their essentials.

On Moving Day: Keeping Calm in the Chaos

The day itself can be overwhelming. Here’s how to manage it for your pet’s sake:

  • Secure a Quiet Room: Before the movers arrive, place your pet in a secure room with their essentials, a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door, and a note for movers to keep the door closed. This protects them from the noise and keeps them from escaping.

  • Travel Safely: Whether you’re driving or flying, prioritize their safety. Secure them in their carrier. If you’re driving, take frequent breaks for potty and water, and never leave them alone in the car. For flights, research the airline’s pet travel policies and book a non-stop flight if possible to minimize stress.

Settling In: Making the New House a Home

Arriving at your new place is a huge moment, but it’s just the beginning for your pet.

  • Start Small: When you first arrive, place your pet in a single, secure room with their food, water, bed, and familiar scents. Let them acclimate to this one space before introducing them to the rest of the house.

  • Pet-Proof Everything: Before you let them explore, do a quick sweep of the house. Look for loose cords, small objects they could chew on, toxic plants, or any gaps in the fence or windows.

  • Stick to the Routine: Pets thrive on routine. Try to re-establish their feeding, walking, and playtime schedules as quickly as you can. This provides a sense of normalcy and helps them adjust.

  • Be Patient and Give Lots of Love: Your pet might act out or be anxious. This is normal. Be patient, give them plenty of love and reassurance, and celebrate the small victories as they get comfortable.

Moving with pets requires a little extra effort, but seeing them happy and settled in their new home makes it all worthwhile. At USMPO, we’re here to help make your entire relocation a success, for every member of your family—two-legged and four-legged.
