Chat with AgentCommon Types of Moving Fraud
- Hostage Loads: A mover loads your goods, then demands significantly more money before delivering. This is illegal under federal law.
- Low-Ball Estimates: A rogue mover provides an unrealistically low quote to secure your business, then dramatically increases the price on moving day.
- Unlicensed Operators: Moving companies operating without proper FMCSA/DOT registration, putting your belongings at risk with no legal recourse.
- Disappearing Movers: Companies that collect a deposit or load your goods and then become unreachable.
- Hidden Fees: Unexpected charges for stairs, long carries, bulky items, or fuel surcharges that were not disclosed in the original estimate.
What to Do If You've Been Scammed
- Document everything: Keep all contracts, estimates, bills of lading, emails, and text messages related to your move.
- File a complaint with USMPO: Use our complaint form to report the incident.
- Contact the FMCSA: File a complaint at nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov or call 1-888-DOT-SAFT (1-888-368-7238).
- Contact your state Attorney General: File a consumer complaint with your state's AG office.
- Contact local law enforcement: If your goods have been stolen or held hostage, contact your local police department.
