Planning ahead is the best way to protect yourself from moving fraud. Use the resources below to organize your move, find verified carriers, and understand your rights.

Step-by-Step Moving Guide

  1. Research Movers (8-12 weeks before): Search the USMPO Mover Directory to find DOT-licensed carriers. Look for USMPO Verified carriers for added protection.
  2. Get Multiple Estimates (6-8 weeks before): Obtain at least 3 written estimates. Be wary of estimates significantly lower than others.
  3. Verify Your Mover (4-6 weeks before): Confirm DOT registration, insurance status, and complaint history. Ask if they are a carrier or broker.
  4. Register Your Move: Register with USMPO for an added layer of protection and accountability.
  5. Read All Documents: Carefully review all estimates, contracts, and bills of lading. Know the difference between binding and non-binding estimates.
  6. Document Your Belongings: Create an inventory of all items. Take photos and videos for your records.
  7. Moving Day: Be present during pickup. Verify the inventory, check the truck number, and keep copies of all paperwork.
  8. Delivery: Inspect all items at delivery. Note any damage on the inventory sheet before signing.
