Independent, free for consumers, and funded by individual donations, grants, and a verification program for movers who meet our standard.

USMPO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to protecting consumers through education, research, data transparency, and public awareness. Our initiatives are designed to prevent moving-related fraud, deceptive business practices, and consumer harm.

What we do

Three ways USMPO protects consumers

01

Verify carriers

We audit FMCSA-licensed movers against an eight-point standard covering licensing, insurance, background-checked crews, owned equipment, customer reviews, estimate accuracy, transparent pricing, and complaint history. Verification is reissued annually and revoked the day anything slips.

02

Publish data

We aggregate public FMCSA and NCCDB records, run our own audits, and publish per-carrier safety, complaint, and rate data — free, no signup, no paywall. Consumers and researchers can verify any figure on this site against its underlying source.

03

Educate consumers

We publish plain-language guides on federal moving rights, common scams, what an honest quote looks like, and how to file complaints with FMCSA and state attorneys general. Every state has a dedicated consumer-protection page with verified local resources.

Important disclosure

USMPO is not a moving company, broker, or paid lead service.

  • No direct involvement in transactions. We do not accept payments on behalf of movers, collect deposits for moving services, or control the transfer of funds between consumers and carriers.
  • Information and resources only. Everything we publish is for educational and informational purposes. Any agreement, booking, or financial transaction is solely between you and the carrier you choose.
  • Verification is not a guarantee. While USMPO conducts due diligence on every featured carrier, we do not guarantee performance, pricing, or service quality. Do your own research before signing a bill of lading.
  • Independent of FMCSA and DOT. USMPO is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Transportation or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. We use their public records and our own audits.

Our approach

Mission, vision, strategy.

Mission

Our primary mission is to prevent moving fraud and protect consumers engaged in interstate shipping of household goods.

Our secondary mission is to improve commercial motor vehicle safety through data analytics. Together, these efforts modernize a technologically antiquated, under-regulated interstate moving industry.

Vision

A resilient, sustainable household-goods transportation system — one where every move, across state lines or down the street, is seamless and secure for everyone involved.

We envision a transportation ecosystem that contributes to the well-being of individuals and communities: efficient, secure, environmentally responsible, and accountable.

Strategy

Centralize. Verify. Enforce.

1
Centralize

Aggregate the industry's scattered data into one public source. Consumers gain the transparency to navigate a market that has become synonymous with scams, delays, overcharges, and deception.

2
Verify

Audit and regularly re-audit carriers against best practices, pricing integrity, and ethical service. FMCSA licenses hundreds of carriers each year — we condense the list by removing bad actors and recognizing top performers.

3
Enforce

Verification alone isn't enough. With 7,000+ licensed movers in the FMCSA database, we use customer feedback to keep verified carriers accountable — awarding higher rankings to those with clean records and stripping placement from those who slip.

Quick answers

Common questions

What is USMPO?

U.S. Moving Protection Organization (USMPO) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, created as a preventative resource to protect consumers against moving scams, rogue movers, and deceptive business practices.

What is the purpose of USMPO?

To prevent moving fraud through service, protection, and education.

Is USMPO a government agency?

No. USMPO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, independent from the DOT, FMCSA, and any other governmental body. We use FMCSA's public data and our own audits to publish verification status.

Is USMPO responsible for my move?

No. We publish a list of verified movers and company profiles so consumers can make a safe, informed decision. The carrier you select is responsible for the move; our role is to audit, investigate, and verify moving companies, and to advocate for you if something goes wrong.

Is USMPO a moving company or broker?

Neither. USMPO is not a carrier, not a broker, and not a paid lead service. We are a non-profit consumer resource that serves and protects consumers transporting household goods across state lines.

How can USMPO protect my move?

We maintain a verified directory of movers with full company profiles, publish state-specific consumer-protection resources, and accept complaints which we forward to FMCSA and state attorneys general where appropriate. Avoid submitting your info to multiple lead-gen sites — that's a leading cause of mover-spam and scam exposure.
