How to Calculate Linear Feet

Table of Contents

Linear foot” refers to a one-dimensional measurement of length.

For example, linear feet measurements are used for everything from trailers and countertops to rope and lumber because these items can be measured in straight lines.

Step by Step to calculate linear feet:

1.- Choose an item from your inventory. (bed)

2.- Use a tape measure and hook it from one end of the bed to the other end of the bed.

3.- Look at the corresponding number, and you’ve got its length in linear feet.

Did you know that a bed is on average 6.5 feet long?

Why linear feet and measurements are so important in moving?

The more accurate and detailed your information is before your move, the better your experience will be. It’s crucial to gather as much information as possible to ensure that you’re paying for exactly what you’re moving and fully understand the space your belongings will occupy on the carrier’s truck.

Consumers often take for granted the accuracy of the inventory provided by sales representatives. However, it’s important to remember that these representatives are not physically present to assess the size and quantity of your items. As a result, it’s the shipper’s responsibility to carefully review and confirm the details of the inventory to ensure a smoother and more accurate moving process.

For Local Moves:

For local moves, moving companies typically charge based on the time spent transporting, loading, and unloading your belongings. Additionally, there may be extra charges if the customer requires packing materials.

On Long Distance Moves

Whether your move is interstate or intrastate, charges are typically based on the space your belongings occupy on the truck, measured in cubic feet. This cubic footage is multiplied by a rate that generally covers everything—gas, labor, truck use, loading, unloading, and in some cases, packing and unpacking materials, insurance, crating, and uncrating. Essentially, it’s an all-inclusive flat rate that carriers shouldn’t be changing make sure you read this article to learn how to choose a reputable mover and avoid price increases on the day of the move.

How Many Linear Feet of Trailer Space Will I need?

Even if you’re an experienced mover, it’s always wise not to rely solely on instinct. Accurately estimating the linear feet of trailer space you’ll need can be challenging. We recommend taking the time to reassess your needs and use reliable size guides, like the ones shown in the image below, to ensure a smooth and efficient move.

Estes / SureMove provides the following recommendations for their customers –

  • Studio apartment – 4 linear feet of trailer space
  • 1 or 2-bedroom apartment – between 10 and 12 linear feet
  • 2-bedroom home – approximately 14 linear feet
  • 3-bedroom house – about 20 linear feet
  • 4-bedroom home – between 26 and 28 linear feet
  • 5-bedroom home – between 44 and 53 linear feet

Insider Tip

If you know your shipment will take up most of a 28-foot trailer, loading it quickly, using the whole thing, and paying a little extra may be a better option than spending all day loading it “high and tight” just to save a few bucks.

Linear Feet vs Cubic Feet.

While this article has focused on using linear feet to estimate the size of your move, it’s important to note that this method is just one approach and may not always be the most accurate. Linear feet calculations are typically more relevant when working with freight moving companies, which often do not include labor for loading and unloading as part of their service.

For a more precise measurement, it’s better to calculate in cubic feet, as this offers a more comprehensive and robust estimate of your moving needs. Understanding how to calculate linear feet is valuable, but comparing it to cubic feet provides a clearer picture of the space required.

At the USMPO, we assist shippers by reviewing their inventories to ensure accuracy. Additionally, there are various technology apps available that simplify this process, making it easier to achieve precise calculations and a smoother moving experience

Did you know?

  • 26-Foot Truck: Typically holds around 1,500 to 1,700 cubic feet of furniture.
  • 28-Foot Truck: Typically holds around 1,800 to 2,000 cubic feet of furniture.
  • 52-Foot Semi-Truck (Trailer): Typically holds around 3,600 to 4,000 cubic feet of furniture.

These estimates can vary depending on how the truck is packed and the type of furniture being moved.

What to Watch Out For

Moving companies, local carriers, and freight companies use various methods to measure and quote moves, such as linear feet, weight, or just the truck. At the USMPO, we recommend a more reliable approach: quoting based on the size of the move, specifically the amount of space your belongings will occupy on the truck or trucks. This method ensures a more accurate and fair estimate.

To achieve precise quotes, we advise taking a visual or virtual estimate, and having it documented for better accuracy. This approach allows you to assess the actual space required and helps prevent unexpected costs.

What to Watch Out For:

  1. Accuracy of Measurements: Ensure that the measurement method accurately reflects the space your items will occupy. Miscalculations can lead to unexpected costs.

  2. Hidden Fees: Be cautious of additional fees that may not be included in initial quotes. Always clarify what is covered and what isn’t.

  3. Reputation of the Mover: Check reviews and ratings of the moving company to ensure reliability and quality of service.

  4. Documentation: Request a written estimate and keep records of all communications. This documentation can be valuable if discrepancies arise.

  5. Technology Tools: Utilize technology apps that offer virtual estimates and detailed inventory tracking. These tools can streamline the process and enhance accuracy.
